Kirstie Alley 'glad for Travolta Gotti role'

Kirstie Alley has expressed her excitement over the announcement that John Travolta has signed to play alleged mob boss John Gotti in an upcoming biopic.

The actress, who has remained friends with Travolta since they starred together in the 1989 film Look Who's Talking, confessed that she "can't wait" to see him take on the role in Gotti: Three Generations.

"I think that's the most brilliant thing. He asked me should he do it. And it was a no-brainer," she told Extra.

"I'm ecstatic. I can't wait to see him."

Travolta previously offered his support to Alley as she embarked upon a stint on Dancing with the Stars.

He has described the legacy of the Gotti family as "the most interesting untold story in this country".

Helen Mirren 'was scared of Russell Brand'

Dame Helen Mirren has revealed that she was nervous about starring alongside Russell Brand in The Tempest.

The actress had already starred in Arthur with the comedian but insisted that she hadn't spent much time with him.

She told Stylist: "I kind of jumped, but with terrible trepidation. Mostly because it was Russell! We had worked on The Tempest together but never really spent time together until this. Russell is quite an intimidating person."

However, the 65-year-old admitted that she "fell in love" with Brand when she got to know him better.

Mirren explained: "He's so brilliant and rock and roll and I feel so boring and ordinary next to him. So it was quite scary. And I'm not very good at edgy, modern comedy. But in the film meeting I saw this incredibly bright and interesting person making this thing happen - and I fell in love."

Brand previously confessed that he was worried about working with the Oscar-winning star.

He said: "I was frightened before I met her, it made me talk a bit different - like my breathing changed."

Anna Paquin: 'Scream 4 felt like easy choice'

Anna Paquin has revealed that the trick to screaming in Scream 4 is to remember that "none of it's real".

The True Blood star was cast in the new instalment of the horror franchise, where she joined regulars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: "[Scream 4] feels like an easy choice because you already know everyone loves it."

When asked about her scream, the actress added: "The bottom line is, it's all acting."

Other newcomers to join the seires include Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts.

Arquette and Cox recently told a press conference that returning to the film was like being part of a family again, particularly as Cox's character has a child in the film.

However, veteran slasher director Wes Craven admitted recently that the film did not feel like one of his own since Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger was brought in to redraft the script.

Scream 4 is released in US and UK cinemas on Friday.

Eddie Murphy 'won't do more Shrek films'

Eddie Murphy has claimed that he has no interest in reprising his role as Donkey for a further Shrek sequel.

The actor voiced the wise-cracking sidekick for the original Dreamworks animated film more than a decade ago, and has since returned for three big-screen sequels, including last year's Shrek Forever After, and a series of televised holiday specials.

Speaking to TMZ, the former Saturday Night Live star dismissed the suggestion that a fifth feature film will be produced.

"No more Shrek," Murphy said. "I'm Shrek'd out."

He added: "We did five of them if you count the Halloween ones and the Christmas ones. [So that's] quite a bit of it."

Murphy went on to say that one of the reasons that the movies have been so successful is that the humour appeals to both children and adults.

While the comic may not be willing to return to the Donkey character, the Shrek series is to continue with the spin-off Puss In Boots, which is to be based around the popular character voiced by Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.

Puss In Boots is scheduled to be released on November 4 in US cinemas and on December 9 in the UK.

James Cameron launches 3D partnership

James Cameron has announced a new partnership aimed at making 3D technology more widely available to filmmakers and TV broadcasters.

Cameron has teamed up with fellow 3D evangelist Vince Pace for the partnership, after the duo worked together on developing the Fusion 3D camera for Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar.

At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas yesterday, the Cameron-Pace Group (CPG) was officially announced, with headquarters in Burbank, near Los Angeles.

The CPG will aim to "accelerate worldwide growth of 3D across all entertainment platforms including features, episodic and live television, sports, advertising and consumer products".

Cameron and Pace will serve as co-chairmen for the venture, with Pace also serving as chief executive. The group will aim to develop a new generation of 3D camera systems, services and other creative tools to "realise 3D's full potential as a creative and powerful storytelling and live broadcast medium".

In an NAB keynote speech, Cameron said: "We have a very specific strategy and are investing aggressively in R&D. Our strategic plan is to make 3D ubiquitous over the next five to ten years on all platforms."

The filmmaker said that the new venture will aim to become a global brand "that is synonymous with high-quality 3D, and spans multiple channels, from features to episodic television, and changes the boundaries of what is understood to be 3D material".

Cameron also predicted that there will be 100% adoption of 3D technology in cinemas within the next five years, meaning "everything will be produced in 3D and 2D versions will be extracted from that".

3D technology developed so far by Cameron and Pace has helped generate $4.7bn in box office receipts across a range of entertainment content, including Avatar, Tron: Legacy and the U2 3D concert.

Steven Spielberg praises Sidney Lumet

Steven Spielberg has praised late American film director Sidney Lumet.

Lumet passed away on Saturday from lymphoma at the age of 86 at his home in Manhattan, New York.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg called Lumet "one of the greatest directors in the long history of film".

"Compelling stories and unforgettable performances were his strong suit," Oscar winner and Super 8 producer Spielberg said of the Dog Day Afternoon director.

Lumet helmed almost 50 films by the time of his death, including The Verdict, Network and 12 Angry Men, starring Henry Fonda, which was nominated for three Academy Awards upon its release.

The filmmaker was nominated four times for an Academy Award, and was presented with an honorary Academy Award for 'Lifetime Achievement' in 2005

Elijah Wood: 'The Hobbit plot a mystery'

Elijah Wood has revealed that he is very excited about returning to New Zealand to star in The Hobbit.

The actor will take part in the shooting from the winter onwards after filming his television series Wilfred.

He told Coming Soon: "They've stretched it out over the course of two films – I'm so curious as to what other elements they've woven in, because there are certainly additional works that refer to that same time period that they could weave into it.

"So I'm just very excited to sort of see what the ultimate vision is."

Wood will be playing Frodo Baggins again, who does not feature in the novel The Hobbit.

Lord of the Rings fansites have speculated that Wood's return could mean that other characters including Samwise Gamgee and Merry will be reprised for the prequel.

Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie has also been confirmed to play a new role in The Hobbit.

Video: 'Harry Potter' stars film final scene

For Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint the Harry Potter journey began more than a decade ago when Warner Bros selected the young whippersnappers to star in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Cut to 2011 and the trio are all grown up, household names, have billions in box office earnings behind them and, as the July 15 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 approaches, are about to leave behind the series for good.

Their final day filming saw them bow out with an unglamorous leap across a green screen stage. It was an emotional moment, and one that's captured in the following behind-the-scenes video with producer David Barron on hand to fill in the details.

Neve Campbell: 'Sequel obsession is terrible'

Neve Campbell has spoken out against the slew of "terrible" sequels, prequels and adaptations produced by Hollywood.

The 37-year-old, who returns to the iconic role of Sidney Prescott in upcoming slasher Scream 4, bemoaned the Tinseltown practice of overlooking creative but untested new stories in favour of franchises and follow-ups.

She told Contactmusic: "We're going back to versions of movies that were only out a short while ago. There are sequels and all theses prequels to all the sequels. It's a terrible situation, it truly is. It makes me sad because there are so many great stories out there waiting to be told.

"Every single comic, every single book is made into a film. Do you know an author pitching a book nowadays is asked to consider whether there's a possibility of making a film from it? So films are even limiting the kinds of books we'll be able to read."

Despite her distaste for sequels, Campbell confessed that she felt unable to stay away from Scream writer Kevin Williamson's "really great" vision for a fourth instalment.

She argued: "What's Scream 4 in the grand scheme of things? We made the last one, like, 12 years ago, c'mon!

"I felt we'd done such a good trilogy we shouldn't push our luck. Then Kevin pitched me his idea and I thought, 'This could actually be really great'. I knew it would be fun to see everyone again."

Campbell previously discussed her reluctance to return to the Scream franchise.

Director Wes Craven hinted this weekend that he may helm a further two planned Scream sequels.

Scream 4 is released in the US and UK on April 15.

Edgar Wright 'completes Ant-Man script'

Edgar Wright has handed an Ant-Man script over to Marvel Studios, his writing partner has revealed.

The Shaun Of The Dead director's co-writer Joe Cornish confirmed at this weekend's Kapow! Comic Con that a second draft of the superhero film had been completed.

Cornish announced to Bleeding Cool: "We delivered the second draft of Ant-Man two days ago, and we're really happy with it."

The project, which has yet to be officially greenlit, is reportedly being lined up to follow Marvel's 2012 vigilante-team up The Avengers, and has a tentative 2014 release date.

Wright resumed work on the Ant-Man script in January after taking a leave of absence to complete Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Wright previously started that he wanted to create a "bad-ass" Ant-Man adaptation.

Courteney Cox: 'Friends movie won't happen'

Courteney Cox has claimed that a Friends movie is unlikely to ever be made.

The Scream 4 actress, who played house-proud foodie Monica Gellar in the NBC sitcom, argued that reuniting the cast for a big-screen adventure would be a logistical nightmare.

When asked by The Mail On Sunday whether a Friends movie would ever hit cinema screens, Cox replied: "No. I just can't see that happening. I mean, I'm not in control of it and if I was, we'd have already done it.

"But it involves so many different people's lives and schedules that I just don't know how you'd get it all together. So no, I don't see it happening."

Despite admitting to losing contact somewhat with her Friends co-stars, Cox confirmed that she had been approached by former colleague Lisa Kudrow to appear on the US version of Who Do You Think You Are?, which the 47-year-old executive produces.

Cox teased: "Lisa's asked me to be on it; apparently they've found something in my family history which they won't tell me because they like to surprise the person. It's an amazing show and I'll probably do it - it's just trying to find the time."

Cox previously confessed that she has "daydreamed" about making a Friends movie.

Her co-stars Matt Le Blanc and David Schwimmer have both rejected suggestions that a Friends movie is close to being greenlit.

Jessica Biel 'offered Total Recall female lead'

Jessica Biel is said to have been put forward for one of the lead roles in Len Wiseman's upcoming remake of the sci-fi classic Total Recall.

Variety claims that Sony have offered Biel one of the film's two lead female parts, although negotiations for the part in question have yet to begin.

If cast, Biel will either play lead character Douglas Quad's wife Lori, who is eventually discovered to be an undercover spy, or a resistance fighter called Melina who teams up with Quad.

In the 1990 original, Lori was played by Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone, while Law & Order: Los Angeles regular Rachel Ticotin played Melina.

Colin Farrell has already been cast as Douglas Quad, Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in the original, while Bryan Cranston will star as the film's main villain.

Previous reports have suggested that the likes of Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth and Eva Green were all under consideration for the film's female roles.
