Director Carlo Carlei has confirmed that Hailee Steinfeld will not appear in any nude or lovemaking scenes in his upcoming adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
Earlier this week, a British tabloid reported that part of Julian Fellowes's script called for the 14-year-old actress to be nude in one scene.
"In the original adaptation written by the Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, there was a lovemaking scene that included nudity for the married Romeo and Juliet," Carlei said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. "The script was written with a 20-year-old actress in mind.
"As soon as Hailee Steinfeld was cast, all nudity and lovemaking have been exercised from the script. It will be romantic and age-appropriate for a 14-year-old."
Steinfeld was first linked to the Shakespeare adaptation earlier this year, although no actor has yet been announced for the role of Romeo.
The Piano actress Holly Hunter will portray Juliet's nurse, while Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick has been linked to the part of Tybalt Capulet.
Romeo and Juliet is expected to begin filming later this year.
